Port Charlotte Scottish Barley, the Winter Solstice Whisky of 2013

This time of the year is full of flavors and strong tastes. Oriental, Scandinavian, Celtic, Teutonic and even Gothic present their full choice of tastes and spices. Who dares to try on old Viking delicacies and who rather seeks south, to enjoy a variety of fruits and cheese? It is all about appreciation of the year past, and to celebrate what’s coming next. Winter solstice is near and thus there is a great time to choose one whisky to go with all these splendid holiday times.

20131215-20131215144543-IMG_2189_small For me, to bring in warmth, the whisky needs to have smoke and a strong character. Peat, fire, smoke and charred oak. They all are very present on this one. Some spices, some leftovers of the warm oak. The nose is strong and pleasant. This is a whisky to enjoy by fire and family, friends and laughter.

Taste enhances those feelings. Strong (50%) burning fire, by the fireplace, is an delicacy enjoyed both externally and internally. Some pepper, some spice, even a slight hint of fruits and citrus is present.  This is not the Santa, this is the Dragon who is only masquerading as a bearded shaman with a red cap. There is potent magic, lava and spells. But keeping with the spirit, there is lots of light mood and complex character. The perfect dram for the Winter Solstice and Christmas times.

Charred wood will last long in mouth and this Uisge Beatha will provide some topics to  discuss and enjoyable experience that will do fine with Finnish chocolates and sweet bagels. But you also want to try this one with cheese and fish foods. The testing will commence, how this will fare when taken to sauna for full enjoyment. What I can confirm, that this is a whisky that is made of warmth and friendship, to be enjoyed during those long and dark nights of Winter.

Other great whiskies to be enjoyed during this time of the year are

  • Ardbeg Corryvreckan, filled with tar fire and smoke. Strong, tasty and memorable.
  • Octomore 5.1 or 6.1: the high peak experience, that will stop the clock for a moment
  • Kilchoman Loch Gorm has smoke and sweetness, it will be a delightful different realm of tastes – easier for some, and brings in the happiness via ethereal messenger

Kummallisia sample-pulloja maistelussa

20131123-20131123161344-IMG_2047_small

WhipperSnapper

Sieppo taitaa jaella tätä viskiä ahkerasti ympärilleen. Elävä Pullo oli aiemmin tutustunut tähän mysteerin nimissä. Viskin viralliset sivut kertovat  että Whippersnapper on nuori, villi, vanhempia kunnioittamaton persoona jolla kuitenkin on kunnianhimoa ja potkua ajaa itseään eteenpäin kohti menestystä. Aina se ei onnistu.
Tuoksu on aika ärhäkkä.

Maku on makea. Todella makea minun kielelleni. Palautti uskoa Springbankkiin minulle!

Blanton’s Gold Edition 51.5% (2001)

20131123-20131123161428-IMG_2049_small
Tuoksu on kyllä selvää Bourbon-maailmaa.

Taannoisessa bloggareiden Gallowsbird –tapaamisessa vaihtoivat pienet samplepullot omistajia ahkerasti.

Maku on vähän kevyehkö, ennen pientä lyönnintapaista. Darach-Ur on yleensä ärtsympi, joten siinä mielessä mielenkiintoista kuulla mistä on oikein kyse. Tutuhko jokatapauksessa. Jälkimaku on mukavan öljyinen ja tamminen.

#T

Glen Elgin 1989 54.2% Mackillop’s Choice Single Cask

Tuoksu oli miellyttävä ja vei ajatukset kesään. Niitty, koivumetsässä oleva keto josta lähti raikas ja makea tuoksu.

Glen eglin

Craigellanchie 9YO 60.1% Signatory Single Butt

Viimeistely sherrytynnyrissä on osunut hyvin kohdalleen, tehden tästä sielukkaan maukkaan dramin!

Kilchoman 2007 vintage 6yo – Relax, enjoy and live a little

The dark and stormy late autumn can grow tiring. Lack of light, short days, fog and rain, wind that topples hundreds of trees and smashes electricity grid offline for days. In the dark, it is great to have some relief and escape to warm memories of long past summer. The heat, the sun. Lakes that invite you to swim and dive, rocky shores, small details in twisted pines and reflections. While in the dark, free your mind and 20131121-20131121133905-IMG_2040_smallfeel the summer in your thoughts. There are adventures that await, splendid wonders and strong experiences. But sometimes.. when you feel dark..  pour a dram and enjoy the moment. Life is wonderful.

Kilchoman distillery began it’s production in 2005. Finally they have released their, so far, oldest bottling. Vintage 2007 is 6 years old Kilchoman. It is matured solely in fresh bourbon barrels and it’s release is about 10 000 bottles. I must admit, that I have loved Kilchoman since the first dram I tasted it. Young, smoky, stylish and tasty. For me, it seems that the distillery really puts their heart and skills into it. And younger whisky also goes with faster pace of modern day – you will need more variations and innovations to stay on top. You just can’t do “the same old” again and again. At least I enjoy the different tastes and experiences distilleries produce these days.

The nose is warm and delightful. Peat and smoke, combined with bourbon vanilla and oak. Strong but not aggressive. Powerful but not mindless. There really is character that I do enjoy.

Tasting continues the experience. One of the best Kilchoman for me. Clean, peaty, smoky and broad vanilla that is not overwhelmed. Citrus and smoke. This is a dram for relaxation.  There is no edge, no fist and you don’t get beaten up. This is lingering, stays on your tongue for a very long time. Smoke is a bit different than before, it has evolved to more complex form that can weave some magic to your nervous systems. The finish is really long.

I do like that this one is quite soft. But it is not a runaway soldier. It has teeth, it has power, but they are presented in paladin’s form. Elegant, smooth and shiny – but you know there are thousands of miles behind those eyes. This is one for tastings! Before writing a blog, I took some Machir Bay 2013 first to find out my whereabouts. I do recommend using these two scotch in this order in any tasting. They work out beautifully!

Two latest products of the Kilchoman distillery are Second Club Release and this 2007 Vintage.

the Kilchoman 2013 Club Release, Second Edition

20131121-20131121133737-IMG_2034_small

The dream wakes you up. Hiking up the hill, you hear a small waterfall pour downwards. Steps walk in, and you find yourself floating in the air, moving towards the mystical spring. It glitters and sparkles in the moonlight and days and nights pass by. Warm fog surrounding, you wake up in the edge of cliff that strafes the deep gorge. This is still a dream, soft and strange. Is it you that is moving, or the earth that turns as you find yourself a new string of journey?

Kilchoman has released their second club edition. One year ago they had a true single cask release as their first edition of club release, it was sold out very rapidly. This year they decided to include 2000 bottles in their club release. The specs are: cask strength (58.2%), a vatting of 8 selected first fill 2008 bourbon barrels finished in 4 fresh Oloroso sherry butts. Casks are numbered 485-490 and 567+568. Distilled 10/2008 and bottled 4.11.2013. So how does this fare? Unlike usually, this blog entry has been written just when the bottle has been opened the first time. So it may change somehow in the following weeks.

The nose is sweet and deep like a candy store with bookshelves. Oils are surprisingly light and quick, but they do have complex characteristics. A bit like a shapeshifter ninja. The more you nose the glass, the more rich the result is. Smokiness combined with sweetness is a very delightful experience. And I think there is a knight hiding in there somewhere.

First mouthful is sweeeeeeet! Oily, soft, powerful and like sliding down the hill! Smokiness attacks you afterwards and the knight pulls out his sword and hits you a few times on your tongue. But the rich oil is overwhelming and the most enjoyable! Sweetness is real, and it is not bitter.

Finish is nicely smoky and peaty, with some fruits and sweets. The second mouthful reveals more smoke and I must admit, that for me this smoke is very different than what is usually encountered with Kilchoman. A different, less striking, and pleasant. Despite the cask strength, this one is very soft! The knight actually sheaths his sword and tactfully walks away. I predict, that he won’t be appearing after the bottle sits in my whisky case for  a few weeks.

20131121-20131121133648-IMG_2031_small

Aftertaste is nice and easy. Smokiness and peat control it, leaving some room for fruits but mostly it is about the smoke. The finish is long enough, but like most of this dram’s characteristics: it is not that prominent and boastful, instead it is like a spirit of a lost royal lady who will touch your cheek gently while you stare her amazed. If you nose the glass, once it is empty.. it is rich in smoke and peat combined with fruity features. Excellent!

What I find lacking, is that this does not wake up a strong story. It has poems, quotes and rhymes, but no real protagonist that would ride me to riddles and wake up the strange. Interesting, but not striking. Stylish, but not bolsterous. On the earth, not traveling the stars. Smoldering, not exploding. Depending on the mood and the situation, this might be just an excellent drink to serve the situation. Not to control it.

I will revisit this one later, but let’s just let it be for a few weeks first.

Hyviä ehdotuksiakin tuli, joista voisin nostaa esille oman ehdotukseni Lagavulinin Distiller’s Editionin muodossa. Sen kaverina tavallinen Lagavulin 16 voisi toimia hyvin, muistuttaen humisevasta takasta. Vieno savu osuu hyvin suomalaiseen periluonteeseen.

Samplet

Tulihan siellä maisteltua muutamaa viskiäkin. Uusia tuttavuuksia, ainakin näin äkkiseltään. Illan lopuksi lähtimme yksitellen, eri reittejä, pimeään yöhön.

Teerenpeli Kymppitynnyri Single Barrel 10 yo 43%

Edradour Ruby Port Cask 8yo 46%

Royal Brackla S. Highland 12yo 50%

Gallows1Kuningattaren (Elizabeth II) 60-vuotisen hallinnon juhlaviski paljastaa lasista oikein kivat öljyt.

Breath of Speyside 18YO – Attack of the NinetyOneBomb

“Come – my friends – let’s get our mounts and hunt for an adventure! To the glory! To the pages of legends!”

BreathOfSpeysideThose were most likely words of some knights and intrepid fortune-seekers in past centuries. They did seek to become legends, to become center of tales that were unfolded carefully in taverns from the east to the west coast, where roaring waves of deep sea crashed sharp rocks on shallow, treacherous, waters.  They were bold and daring, dashing and charming. In the fight, they laughed at the dark robed man wielding a scythe. And thus they fell. One each time, until the last man realized they will be forgotten. No one would tell their tales, no one would sing about their deeds and victories. They would not even be a star in the winter night sky. No, they were light those mystical Northern Lights and vanish as silently and quickly as they emerged.  He rode to the undiscovered countries. Far away lands, that were only haunted by vicious men wearing kilts and wielding trunks of trees. There he wandered and found a place where to hide their secrets and treasures, and where to write some stories. It is there, where he teach those savage warriors something that would make the land famous. In the last night he was imprinted to the big books of history, when the wildest tribe chose to take his name to honor the dram he created, Speyside.

The story may be a slightly different in today’s history books but something remained for us to taste. The famous house of Adelphi wields many secrets. One of their mysterious drams is called the Breath of Speyside. Nobody knows, how it is created or from what it is created, but there are whispers in shady corners of those-not-that-reputable taverns. Not a big surprise, but I did stay away from them. So all I know is, that ‘The Breath’ is 18 years old. Distilled 1991 and bottled 2009. The Drampower is nice, 54.2%, which makes it a very interesting cap. The stories and the color tell that some kind of ex-sherry barrels were involved, but the actual enchantment cask has the code 5145 imprinted on it with ancient letters. Probably there are some 600 (full size, not a baby bottle like this one) bottles in the world. A big cask, I take it.

The dram itself. The color is deep and dark. The oil is stubborn and beautiful. The nose is overwhelmed with sherry and a hint of old knight’s gauntlet slapping your cheek with a mighty force. Promising.

First mouthful burns with sherry and .. strong sherry. It is a sherry bomb, that’s what rushes through my unprotected mind. I knew it would be. I should have known. But yet, it strikes deep, dodging all of my defenses.  A bit more careful approach is needed and that’s when you start to find some of the magic. I find myself missing the smoke and peat, however. Fruits, sweetness and even some chocolate is present when you taste it carefully. There is no tale, there is but a everlasting thunder of sherry drums that echo through ages and planes.

What remains, is the taste of.. sherry. Dryness and bitter ending. This is not a aftertaste I enjoy, I must admit. Usually I like Breath of XXX but I must admit this is an exception that confirms the rule.

Once you empty your glass, and choose not take water on top of this and wait. I kept on writing this story and waited. The taste do remains for a long time, but what is better – it changes. It burns, it boils, but it does change for the better. There are burned fruits, fried sugar and melted chocolate. There are remains of sherry, slightly readjusted with a flame-thrower or a sherry-seeking missile. But I do like the feeling, the taste in my mouth. Perhaps my advice is, in case you have similar receptors than I have, to drink this rather quickly, and enjoy the afterglow. Slainté!

Turun Whisky Barin tarjontaa sekä maistelussa Laphroaig 1989 23yo ja Kilchoman 100% Islay Single Cask

Aiemmin kertomani Kilchoman-maistelu tapahtui Turun Whisky Barissa. Sijainti on aivan loistava, suoraan torin vieressä. Jottei juoman perässä olijalla olisi liian helppoa, on uudelle kävijälle edessä pieni löytämishaaste koska suuret neonvalot eivät näy torille saakka ja taverna ei sijaitse ihan jalkakäytävän vierellä. Kunhan sisäpuolelle pääsee, tarjontaa löytyy kyllä mukavasti.

Wbar1

Eikä tuossa kuvassa ole edes kaikkea, mitä on saatavilla. Paikan pitäjä ymmärtää viskien päälle, joten siellä on hyvä ympäristö maistella tarjontaa.

Kilchoman 100% Islay 1st Edition Single Cask 2011

WP_20131102_019

WP_20131102_022

Toisena extrana tuli maistettua vähän aikaisempaa Kilchomania.

Viski tuoksuu mukavasti lasissa.

Kilchoman Tasting 2.11.2013 Turun Whisky Barissa

Pääsin viikonloppuna osallistumaan Aurajoen halkoman Länsirannikon korkeakulttuurikauppalassa järjestettyyn Kilchoman-maisteluun. Onneksi paikalliset oppaat olivat löydetty jo etukäteen, joten matka syrjäisen torin laidalla sijaitsevaan hämyiseen tavernaan sujui  leppoisasti. Tupaan astuessa aisti heti odottavan tunnelman ja vieraanvaraisuuden, jonka äärellä tulisin viihtymään seuraavat pari tuntia. Kattaus nosti veden kielelle vähän samalla tavalla kuin pekoni Halloween-juhlijalle seuraavana aamuna. Kuvat valitettavasti joutui hahmottelemaan tavallisuudesta poikkeavalla välineistöllä, mutta ajanevat asiansa.

Kilchowb01

Aluksi mitä kuulet, on kivimuurien ylitse kantautuva hiljainen jylinä. Rummun taonnan ylitse näet Lapin tervaskannon sitkeän virnistyksen. Hetken maisema häviää silmistä ja luulet kokevasi tähtiä. Lopuksi istut savuisessa kodassa, jossa mustuneilla hampailla irvistävä shamaani tarjoilee luisevalla kauhalla kuksaasi loitsuilla jähmetettyä savua.

Kilchowb03Viimeisenä maistelussa olikin spesiaalimpi 4YO Sherry Oloroso Single Cask.

In summary: some of Finnish #Whisky #blog writers met today. I must say it was an honor and a privilege to meet them! Networking by an ale or two seems to work for us. Lots of stories to swap, lots of ideas to share. Hopefully we’ll meet again soon, with some luck our numbers grow.

Talisker Dark Storm – from the eye of Skye

At the first, you don’t hear a thing. The wind calms, birds stop their chore and tweets go silent. The dark cloud approaches fast. The wind wakes up first, gathering speed and strength and feeling proud when traveling in front of the storm. The rain, the thunder and it’s bright flashes fill ears and eyes. The storm has arrived.
20130907-20130907101417-IMG_1869_small
Talisker put out their first Storm (in Finnish) earlier this year. It was a delightful experience that made one enjoy the whipping pain of rain on bare face. Now they re-entered the theme with their Dark Storm. It is Talisker, from the Isle of Skye, matured in “selected heavily charred casks”. They also state, that this maturation should give it extra spice and smoke.
The color is very pleasant and something you’d expect to see when looking at whisky. Oils are thicker than I thought they’d be. After all, this isn’t very specially old or strong (45.8%, the usual Talisker) dram. They don’t give out any age for this one, but it’s probably around 10-12YO mostly.
The nose is opening up slowly. At first, it doesn’t give out any surprises – except that it is very afraid and staying at the back corner. Then, when you beg for it, it will produce out a healthy buff of smoke. Much more smokier than any Talisker usually. But I am still very surprised, how delicate the nose it.
20130907-20130907104048-IMG_1945_small

Mouthful gives out at first a smooth, then a bit late biting, smoke. Spiciness and smokiness are very much present here. Variety of tastes travel on my mouth, a bit of chocolate is recognizable but what I like the most is the smoke and the feeling that you are licking a deep-charred wood. There are, luckily I might add – or otherwise I can drop off enjoying whisky and start spending my evenings by an dampened fire – other tastes that fulfill this dram. But it is not too complex. Neither it is a very attacking one either. It is a enchanting dragon with a sweet tongue and smoke buffing out of it’s nostrils. For some reasons, known only to ancient legends, it is holding it’s killing bite back and giving us a very nice expressions of itself. Like a tamed beast.
Despite being a very smoky whisky, it is easy to enjoy and drink. Clearly made to please lots of people and to accommodate today’s worlds endless hunger of Scottish drams, especially smoky ones. This one is really competing with Islay magic!

Octomore 6.1. – antakaas kun kartanonherra kertoo mitä sinä yönä tapahtuikaan..

Kaadetaan ensin lasiin vähän mustan pullon juomaa, tulkaapa lähemmäksi. Minulla on teille jotain kerrottavaa.

Ovi aukeni hiljaa naristen. Muinaisuus mukana kuiskasin vanhaa lorua

20131009-20131009133426-IMG_1951_smallKymmenen on teriä ikuisia

Yhdeksän loitsuja väkeviä

Kahdeksan aarretta löydettäväksi

Seitsemän pulloa savuista juotavaksi

Kuusi soihtua polttavaa sytytettävänä

Viisi arkkua tyhjää kannettavana

Tässä vaiheessa pysähdyin ja kalpenin. Neljä on tunnettuja esi-isiä kadonnut aikojen saatossa – onko nyt aikani. Kadotin sanat mutta tarina jatkui kuin itsestään.

Neljä kohtaloa jo on täyttynyt

Mukana on karhun murinaa, jota on höystetty lumoajattarien kuiskauksilla.

If you ever want to tell a tale, make sure you have some Octomore 6.1. It will dazzle your mind and take your imagination to the world of mysteries and mystical beings. Dragon’s Breath gives this dram a burning heat but also the Enchantress soft whisper will give it a wild magic effect. It has the strength of the bear’s growl that has been tamed by spirit’s songs. There is the beauty and the brute, delegate lady and mansion’s lord. Trickster and the loyal servant. All the elements are here, just tell the tale that has smoke, mystery and fire in it!

Laphroaig Cairdeas 2013 Port Wood Edition for the Friends of Laphroaig

20130907-20130907100711-IMG_1846_smallDeep inside the wilderness, where wild beasts walk and mate, the camp is set. The long hours of day are behind and dark mystical sky turns the hourglass to symbolize it’s reign. The fire is being set up from dead trunks of tree, filled with tar and smoke inside them. Small sticks catch the tender flame first, and they start eating that try tinder that was kept safe during showers and mist. Soon there is a smoke circling the wood and crackling sounds boom the silence. Fire is born and light reveals the tarp and worn out gear. Prehistoric travelers wonder the richness of the sky and wait for the moon to raise, since it is the night that demands rituals to ensure good hunting and game.
I’ve taken a few tastings of Cairdeas, but today when I started to write about it I was surprised about it’s feel and mood. Cairdeas Port Wood (51.3%) is an special annual release and this year it was sold empty in a matter of hours. As name suggests, this has seen port wine finishing to create a variation for ordinary Laphroaig taste.
The nose is charming me. The smokiness is not hitting with full strength, but it is there. As a promise. Also ordinary Laphroaig intimidation is hiding and does a very good job with it.
Taste reveals that the fire is burning. Smokiness is strong and taste bites like a big bear with a mortal wound. It does not last that long, but the peak is powerful. After that it is about the smoke and the wine with sweetness. Not the most ordinary combination with Laphroaig, but for me this is a home run! Second mouthful enhances the sweetness but the campfire keeps on burning and adding smoke. This something that shows off what smoky Islay can also produce. Very enjoyable experience and this one will keep the chatter going on when you have a tasting!  20130907-20130907101226-IMG_1863_small

Glenmorangie SIGNET

Sturdy. Steady. Strong. When you pick this bottle up, you will be amazed by it’s build and weight. It is made to give out a statement, that it is not just a average dram walking on it’s way. There is a mind behind. Signet is captivating on it’s form and design, also the color in the bottle is fantastic. But that’s just the bottle, what about the Whisky?

20130907-20130907103624-IMG_1927_smallSignet is a non-age statement whisky. I was given this one as a present, and I heard that whisky store owner had quite a tale to tell during the acquisition. They say, it has at least 5% of 40 YO Glenmorangie, in the internet they talk about over 30YO but only the distillery knows, I think. It is good to think that there is at least a bit of 40YO in it. Signet is a combination of rare elements and, by their words, clouded in secrecy. And I do like good tales, so this is provocative about it’s origins. Also, Signet has collected winnings in whisky competitions which only makes the anticipation and expectation higher.

One thing I must say already, which I don’t like, is that the coloring is a construct and not a natural result. Of course it is mostly just the color, but it kind of takes away one respectable foot from the evaluation.

Nose is pleasant and rich. It is smooth, easy and made to serve. It is a mix of multiple aromas, where sherry is the most dominant – but using soft leather gloves so there isn’t any snap in it.

Taste starts smooth and pleasurable. After a while there is a bit more sherry, but there isn’t much sting that Glenmorangie often serves for me. This has no edges, it is a rolling hills with meadows that are always sunny and shiny. Lustful and seductive, sweet tastes that combine with kind of coffee like characteristics and on the second mouthful I do get more spices, much more spiciness.
The taste lingers in the mouth a long time after the last sip. I must say that while this is not of Islay, this is something that I do enjoy. There are no harsh feelings, no stingy bees but instead a finely tuned mandolin that can make you feel good and just enjoy the smooth evening!

Bruichladdich Valinch 23YO 2013 Lions Tour

20130907-20130907100229-IMG_1837_smallThe Autumn is closing in. Leaves of trees change their form and color. Some give up and take the last glide towards the ground far beneath. Some are stubborn and enjoy the sun and last moments of the summer, that has lasted longer than usually in Finland. I do welcome that, since there will always be a winter and the dark. In recent tasting I’ve used great lake of Saimaa as a mood agent. It’s been a while since I was able to visit the Lapland, that some memories are fading away. Change is constant as the Northern Star.

Bruichladdich Valinch 2013 is not of smoke. Nor is it of power or peat either but it is of something different and unique. It is only available to distillery visitors and they have a special barrel from which they bottle these drams by hand, using an old copper Valinch. In short: single cask (026) , cask strength (49.9%) and thus this bottle is 160/400. They distilled this one 16.10.1989 and bottled it this summer. Each cask gets a different title, celebrating a different occasion or theme.

This one is said to be “enhanced in premium French oak”. Vigorous searching provided some results that pomerol casks were used for finishing. Deep red wine (bordeaux) as can be seen in the color. The redness is not just about the looks, it is about everything here. I’ve had the pleasure to taste a few red wine barrel finished drams, and I’ve enjoyed most of them. However, rarely they are this strong in character.

20130907-20130907103502-IMG_1922_smallThe color is deep and captivating. You can stare at it. Oils flowing, light scattering and changing it’s form. It is very much alive and kicking! The nose is full and promises strong experience. Bordeaux wine is pleasant and the result has a broad spectrum to experience.

Taste has the first bite. It is strong and oily, while changing it’s form and feel many times when enjoyed. By all means, it is not simple or straight-forward. Red is a strong taste and it runs the overall experience. It is a strange and enthralling combination of whisky and wine, doing something interesting from both worlds. Also, it is not standing in a corner but takes it’s place in the dance floor. Strong and proud, tall and talented. There is fire in these Lion’s eyes, that bellow in deep red and can burst into flames in case the situation requires such an action. Guardian and con-man, historian and futurist. But also you can tell jokes and stories, that will make the crowd laugh!

The taste lingers and gives out memories that remind you of the dancing nights, moonlit walks and lost ways. It will be till the morning, until this one fades away.

The Tasting Night

Recently we held a tasting for over 20 people as part of a celebration party. Our tastings usually have 6-12 participants, so this was a big leap forward. With smaller number of people, you can create a more intimate atmosphere and whatever you say, can be heard effortlessly. Where there almost 30 people, the playground is totally different. And when the tasting started, I found out that the people had gathered in, more or less, a big oval, which is good if you want to be heard and seen.

First, especially since some of the participants hadn’t tasted much whisky before, it was good to recap some guidelines: check visual elements such as color and oils. Tell about the nose, and how it changes over time. And of course tasting, palate and after taste. It is also good to remind, that people take small sips and don’t drink it bottoms up.

Originally, I expected something like 30-40 tasters so I had to include many full or near full bottles in the tasting. for QC there was a spare bottle in case the first one runs out.

This tasting had the following menu.

  • Bruichladdich Laddie 10
  • Laphroaig Quarter Cask
  • Ileach Cask Strength
  • a short break
  • Port Charlotte PC10 (normal range)

Some of those whiskies were unopened, so it was also good to explain to the attendees, that how it affects the taste and what is usually means.

Since it was clear that not everybody is not paying the full attention all the time, it was a celebration party after all, we chose to keep the facts minimum and focus on the story. And it was very clear, that the story – using wild imagination, did carry forward for attention and for feelings. It depends on the storyteller, on the whisky and of course on the audience and the situation what you tell and how.

Our journey started from shores of a Finnish lake, looking at the sunset. A walk to a rocky hill made us set up a small fire to honor the summer past. Looking at the night sky, we experienced the spectacular shooting star show and realized it was a turning point in time. Days turn to night, summer to autumn and new age is emerging.

The second part took us below. Finding a hidden cave and tunnel, which burned walls enclosed us as we descended into the deep earth, where the peat is born. Our journey went through the ages and history, where aged and burned armor, endless battles, ancient beasts and their bones marked the legends that were born there. Finally, when we had ventured into the early history we turned, and emerged. As millenniums raced forward, we felt the magic and we forged the legends to our kind. Undefeated, we emerged into the future, standing on the top of the mountain and celebrated the rising sun’s red beams that lightened rivers of possibilities in front of us. It was time to celebrate.

Balcone Brimstone Whiskey - Oak fire from the broad land

Texas Oak Fire, they say when the sky is filled with fire and brimstone. Those who know, nod knowingly. The smell is like a industrial city burning and forging metal on full speed. They work to the bone. Rocks fell, split and explode filling the streets with the age of efficiency. The smell is inescapable but once you stick in town a while - you get used to it. I got to taste a sample of this most alien Whiskey.

You take a bite. Then the bite takes you with it. Oiliness of those dark engines, blackness of those burnt oak branches. Inevitability of progress that sounds like a factory bell. The time is everything.

I have not had too many experiences with these American bourbon drinks. Most of them have been bad. Only two have remained on the list. This is one of them. No, this is not scotch. Yes, this is better than most of other bourbons. The name gets this one to half-way. The rest of the journey consists of smoke and spiciness. There is a character inside. There is a personality. Even a shallow one but it is more than most of bourbon's got.

I am most interested to see, how they will progress and how they will evolve.. Perhaps industrial town will have a new player who will throw their sabots on the machine and declare a renaissance and new era of taste, smoke and fire with brimstone that burns with a smile and lasting effect.

Bruichladdich news, new Octomore 6.1. & 6.2. 167PPM and more!

octomore62

Bruichladdich is releasing “imminently” new drams for us to enjoy.

Octomore 6.1. gets to a 167 PPM peatsmoke levels and is aged in American oak. Octomore 6.2. that is aged in Limousin oak Aquitaine. Some comments say, however, that it can’t be Limousin and Aquitaine since both seem to refer to a region. But nevertheless, I’ll be waiting for information. Photo by Bruichladdich!

Other imminent releases are Laddie Classic, a new Islay Barley, a new Bere Barley, a new Port Charlotte plus a PC11.

Does anybody has any more details of these?

Bruichladdich Organic meets fresh waters

Bruichladdic Organic, that splendid dram, was begging to get a photoshoot by the lake. What would better work, than fresh lakes of Finland? Clear, clean waters and a warm summer day meet the Islay’s ambassador. Together they have fun and  provided a great environment for tasting.

Laphroaig enjoying the summer

Laphroaig Quater Cask and Cask Strenght 003 took quite a day off recently. I didn’t know they do like to play in the water and seek out places where you don’t usually find Uisge Beatha. But of course, you never know what you will find on the shores, so keep your eyes open. This time it was not a alligator, but something that comes from the sea and brings greetings from the Islay!

Something about world of the spice and smoke

I kept on walking the journey, which took me deeper and deeper into world of tastes. There has been many occasion, since the strawberry stop, that had stopped me to stare the moon and wonder what’s next. How would this and that cope with those delicious ingredients? Eventually, I took the right turn and dived deep into the bog with something I had stolen from the shamans. No, no mushrooms but something we at the mansion use often to give our food some meaning. Garlic, jalapeno and chili.

For this journey, I chose three smoking and smoldering drams: Lagavulin 12 yo Cask Strength 2009, the Ultimate Caol Ila 2000 Cask Strengh single cask and Ardbeg Corryvreckan. All strong and wielding the steel of powerness. These drams hack, slash and take you to the outer limits. Especially Caol Ila, which is very potent (63.7%), takes you to the another plane of existence.

The Garlic
The first encounter was with garlic, enhanced with herbal spells. Lagavulin was perfect and their both tastes got a boost. Smoke and garlic work so well together, while keeping vampire’s off your neck. Caol Ila was strong in taste, even so much that it somewhat shadowed garlic. They do work together, but as a pointy stick. You get the first impression, then the overwhelming magic fills your nerves – and if you are a nightwalker you will flee with awe. Not bad, but with this dram you won’t taste anything of the food and garlic..

The last was one of my favorite Uisge Beathas. The Ardbeg Corryvreckan. Filled with peat, smoke and tar I expected garlic to be blown away. And I was not wrong. Like Lagavulin, Ardbeg complemented garlic with wondrous tales and beautiful poems.

I must say, that if you are looking for a drink to go along with food that has a lots of garlic in it, you might want to consider Ardbeg or Lagavulin to go with it. Overall, I dare to say that peatsmoke does go very well with garlic.

The Chili

Next was the test of strength with chili and jalapeno. I don’t know what chili it was, but something that we had at home and it is handled with care. Strong spice, none the less. I served myself jalapenos and chili, finding the ultimate border with both of them. Jalapeno is usually found on Mexican food, but we tend to use them a lot on many servings.

Lagavulin works, as expected, with jalapenos nicely. It burns somewhat, but in a good way. Taking it with chili, will bring some sweat to your skin – along with fiery sensation on your tongue. But unlike I feared, it is a not a Drawmij’s Instant Death. Instead, these two fighters work together and face a force far greater they could do together.

Caol Ila gives no mercy and will cut you into small pieces. Since I had already tasted the Lagavulin and chili, this is a real killer. Jalapeno + chili accompanied by Lagavulin and then jalapeno and Caol Ila it gets you to hell and then to very high euphoria. Caol Ila’s demeanor and intimidation do create new worlds. After a while, the peak withers away but there is still strong battle going on. Recommended only for those seeking how to break the sense-limit. Funny is that was just the jalapeno. Taking some chili on top of it, did not create the dragon’s all-devouring breath I feared. Yes, the taste and sensation is very strong but with a successful saving throw you can take it and experience the bliss.

Finally the everswirling maelstrom of Corryvreckan. First, with jalapeno you don’t get anything extreme. It is like they are meant together. After the first sip, if you wait, you will get the real taste and burn. With chili, note that this tasting is done by one sitting, you get the dragon’s breath. Ardbeg does boost the experience, gets tears into your eyes and takes you to a trip across all levels of Abyss and Elysium. Tears of pleasure, tears of pain and burn. Smoke fills your eyes and lips can start a forest fire if you just bend low and kiss the tree's root.  I was flying and plowing at the same time.

The End game

Well, now that some of the tears have gone there is time for the analysis. I make it short. If you want to enchant the taste of chili, use smoke whisky. The thin line is somewhere at 60%. Caol Ila will send you deep down, while Lagavulin can be much more gentle. Ardbeg gets stronger as time passes, so Corryvreckan is an excellent sensation bringer.

Next time I offer spicy or highly garlic food to my friends, they will have to drink a dram of peatsmoke with it.  Saying no is not allowed, or they will end up hungry and thirsty.

Take your Islay Time

Calm morning, sun shining and Eurasian Crane´s screech wake you up. Get out of the tent, smell the moist morning and take a dive into lake water. Blue, chilly and refreshing. Where to today, which path to choose. You might just delay and let time decide for you. Grab a book, read, swim and sleep. In the passing of time, there are no hours and minutes. The time has lost its meaning. You might as well relax and enjoy the summer.

It is usually difficult to find the right whisky during the hottest summer. I rather choose the chilly sparkling wine or a cold beer. But when the night turns in and temperature falls, you can find your tongue missing some familiar tastes.

In case full single malts are still too much, or you are sitting with friends by the fire, you might want to look at those blends or vattings. One of blends is this mysterious Islay Time. Very much smoke, nicely peaty and comes with a Viking character. It wields a heavy sword and handles it’s shield. You might have encountered some of these if you dug deep at the famous Ardbog moors.

I’d say there is a lots of Caol Ila in this one. Most likely Ardbeg as well. This is surprisingly good for a blended whisky. Just a perfect drink for sitting, chattering and sharing with larger doses.
During the summer, there are lots of flies too. They don't seem to be interested by this dram. And if they would - it would not matter since this is 40% strong. Horse-flies however, do prefer dark beer for a swimming pool.

Whisky experiments: strawberries

Since it is the summer and during this season strawberries are at their best, it is the reason to experiment a bit. For those, who are impatient: don’t do it.

I’ve been always keen to try out new tastes, when it comes to whisky. So far this journey is just beginning, but hopefully I can share some results as time passes by. I see no reason, why there would not be a good combinations of various whisky and food.

Strawberries.. They are very sweet and there is a very fresh taste when they are at their best. In this case, those were picked on the same day as tasted, and they were also organically produced.

I gave a few different styles of whisky a chance:

  • 20130706-20130706142531-IMG_9821_smallSpringbank 14yo single cask. This was a very much sherry flavored dram, but I must say this combination did not work out at all. It was all very bitter and tastes conflicted on the elemental level.
  • Highland Park 16yo. Similar experience, than with Springbank 14. Sherry and strawberries just don’t work.
  • Ardbeg Galileo. Perhaps Marsala wine would help? Perhaps a bit, but not much. I didn’t try combination with dark chocolate and strawberries, but I suspect it might just do the trick with Galileo.
  • Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2006. Nope, didn’t work. The summery taste of Barley was lost and the result was a conflict again. Not that unpleasant, but not a good one either. No luck here.
  • Benromach Peat Smoke. This was almost a ok mix. But still, I would not offer this to anybody as a delicacy. Peat did work out a lot better than sherry, however.
  • Wasmund’s bourbon. This actually worked out the best. Strong tastes, but from a different world helped out. The result was much more in alignment with strawberries, than it was when tasting a Scotch whisky.

The result is.. Unless you really want to – strawberries and whisky are not a taste that go together as raw elements. Bourbons however, might do the trick to some level but it was not nearly as good as mixing strawberries with a sparkling wine. But I will continue experimenting, and check out if – by a cosmic chance of the vast universe  - some tastes do actually lock in to each other like tar to your favored cloth.

Summer continues! Slainté!

Kilchoman Whisky news

100_Islay_3rd_Hi_Red_Cap[1]Kilchoman Distillery has been busy. 15th of July they will release 100% Islay 3rd Edition, batch is limited to 10 000 bottles. It is a vatting of four and five year old fresh bourbon casks. You should expect delicate and floral nose of soft fruits and pear drops which explodes with peat smoke in the mouth. Picture by Kilchoman.

I enjoyed earlier 100% Islay editions, especially the 2nd edition hit the right smoke receptors in my mouth. Somehow, I don’t think this would do any less effect. Kilchoman has been developing their whisky into better and better all the time, at least on my Glencairn.

Also, they have upcoming releases in 2013 Autumn
