Laphroaig PX and Laphroaig PX

They are both distilled, both matured three times and even in similar casks: at first in the ex-bourbon, then at the Quarter Casks and finally in Pedro Ximenez. What is different, is how they dress up. The rest of differences I’ll taste soon enough.
Laphroaig, like all distilleries in general, are making changes. Usually they move into more non-age statement whiskys (like this one) to get more products out more quickly and to experiment. Of course the financials win here. How good whisky can you produce and how much money you can get from it. They don’t work for charity, but then again not all products please us who chant in the name of smoky drams.

Comparing the old PX and the new PX.

• The color is almost the same. The older version is a tiny bit darker in hue.
• The nose is slightly different. The older version is more like a pirate, while the new version is the married captain. It has the experience, but is also softer on surface.
• The old one has a striking palate. Strong, Hard hitting. a sharp knife that stabs but you will feel euphoria. A wind of the sea that blows and brings the rain with southern spices and fruits. 
• The new one’s palate is a lot softer. It is much more smooth but when comparing to the pirate: the captain does not have his left arm anymore. The bite is gone and it has affected his outbursts as well. More careful and planning and also less dangerous.

It would be easy to say that new one is but a shadow of the old master. But that’s not all in the story. It has changed, and it will please more people as it is now. It is less harsh, less crude and it will speak you in Shakespearean lyrics.

Occasionally that is good, since you don’t want to dwell too deep into sailor’s stories. But then again, the rounded body is not always what you want to experience. You need a companion that is rough and tough, to bring out the joy in the darkest moment.

But it is also about the contrast. The new PX is a lord among noble men and damsels of high kings court. It is still the captain of the ship, but it would not dare to oppose the pirate it learned the tricks from. However, it will charm the dames and it can dance too if needed. Choose your adventure first, then choose your companion for it.

Off the record: the finishing scent in the glass is excellent in both of these. The pirate is stronger, though.

Laphroaig 18yo vs Laphroaig 18yo: just a new label or something else?

Distilleries don’t just repeat what has brought them success and money over the years. They renew themselves now and then. Labels get updated. The taste and process updates. It is a very well known situation, that the whisky was much better during 80s and 90s, especially if you ask people who were drinking drams during those legendary decades. The No-Age-Statement (NAS) is almost a forced way where distilleries must aim at, if they have any hopes of bringing out new products to market in a rapid pace. And then there are renewals of old classics, like the Laphroaig 18YO.

The most prominent note first: the labels are different and I must say I do enjoy more the older one. The green and “kinda clover like” approach is about a luck of the selected few who can enjoy it. It is classic (for me). The new design on the bottle and box are in line with everything else coming from Laphroaig these days, so I can see there is a need to do this. But since this is just the box and the label, I can skip it easy and concentrate on the bottle’s contents.

The color is very close to the same as before. Both are colored, so this is not a big surprise. Perhaps the old one had a slightly more matte surface, but it might be just me eyes wandering.

The nose and palate different. The nose of the old one is more tamed and broad, than the more eager newcomer’s nose. The young 18YO has energy, smoke and sharpness .. and less complexity. The smokiness of the classic version runs over the new label with a experience and steady surface. The newcomer has more phenols present.

The old version’s palate is strong and stylish. There is a pleasant smoke and Laphroaig taste that has improved with years. The recent version’s palate has more Laphroaig gings at the end, but the start is smooth. However, it does not feel as complex as the previous version. It missed the big smoke of the old version, but it is easier (=less experience) to drink. The finish however, feels more fresh and lasts longer.

Both of these drams are great. There is no doubt of that. Spice and smoke, phenols and peat. They are strong, like brothers, but they have slight differences and they don’t always agree. The newcomer seems to be more hasty, perhaps suffering a bit from the modern day pace and challenges, but it does it job. However, if you have a chance to get your hands on the old version of 18YO Laphroaig – I suggest you use the opportunity.

I am sure, that in 5-10 years when the next update of Laphroaig 18YO emerges, it will provide similar feelings – that the current new one feels classic. And yes, in my opinion, they did Laphroaig 18YO better than these days. Of perhaps I was used to it’s taste… And I must point out, the new one’s bottle was just opened 30 minutes before writing this article. So it was naturally a bit necky and cocky. I will get onto this later, and do a short re-comparison. 

Laphroaig 1996 17YO OMC single cask 10125

It is almost the Midsummer and the Summer Solstice. It is the time when in the old days people celebrated the light and performed many rituals to multiple gods and nature spirits to ensure the good fortune, crops and fertility for the summer and autumn. In Finland it also included lots of spirits of different nature, distilled at the moonlight usually. This is also the time, when you can relax and enjoy a good dram or few, to honor the ancient culture and habits. Some people are very pedant about this, but I would not recommend passing out to a summer night. This year you might freeze to the beyond, but at least you will serve your flying friends – mosquitoes - their best feeding plate for that night. Let’s take it easy and venture to the world of this OMC bottle.

Laphroaig, the iconic distillery at Islay, has been on and off for me. On, for the taste, smoke and experiences. Off, for being too popular. In a last few weeks I’ve been trying a few different Laphroaigs and they have reminded me about it’s diversities. What is the basic Laphroaig made of? Peat. Fire. Smoke. Salt. Iodine. Medical taste. It is the most often found smoky whisky in Finnish taverns. It is not a bad choice.

I got my hands onto this Old Malt Cask 17YO Laphroaig (distilled 1996 October , bottled 2013 October, Refill Hogshead ref 1025, 347 bottles, 50%) recently. On my first try, this was the most woody dram I’ve had for a long time. Oak. Oak. Wood. Oak. The box claims that there is oak in the finish, so at least I am on the same track here.

The nose is elegant, a bit sweet and contains peat and oak. Smoke is present, but I could not guess that his is Laphroaig. At least not immediately. The oils form up nicely in the glass. This has a lots of style and fun in it already!

Palate opens up with the peatsmoke and soon turns into a big oak. A really big trunk of oak. It is like licking at the fresh barrel for me. Some vanilla, iodine and other Laphroaig characters are there but mostly cowering behind that oak. Iodine grows more present and identifies this more to this distillery.

The finish leaves lots of oak chips into the mouth. They are present, alive, with the peatsmoke and last for a long time. The result is really dry and different from many Laphroaigs. I don’t even remember Triple wood being this oak consumed.

So is this good or bad? I think I go on with the different-card here. I do like this, a lot, for being so extraordinary and yet containing that marvellous peat and smoke that fondle my taste receptors pleasantly. However, this is not a easy dram. This is not soft nor a yellow magazines winner. This is for the moments, when you ponder about the birth of the universe, discuss about Tolkien mythology or organize your stamp collection… Perhaps not the last one, for most of us anyway.

Even after writing the article, the oak still remains in my mouth. Oak and iodine. This is one quality dram, that is appreciated by those who enjoy this world!

Laphroaig Cask Strength 006 – double’oh rises again

The Laphroaig Cask Strength (the recent one) series has been a keen interest to me. For the first three batches. They had the jam and the bite, which I enjoyed very much. Especially 002 and 003 were the spot on, with their smoke and peatfire in balance. I skipped 004 and 005 mostly for availability reasons, but since the 006 came out I had to revisit the timeline and see how they are progressing. This one has been bottled on February 2014 and it actually has an age statement: 10YO. Matured in seasoned oak barrels. And it is cask strength (58%) - which I usually enjoy since it adds to the experience.

The nose is like a small, well burning, cooking fireplace. There is heat and then there is sometimes some smoke. The nose is surprisingly weak, until you try it out very carefully – to avoid the heat – you can find out something about Laphroaig in it.

The body is first very sweet and it is accompanied by oak, along came some spices and peatfire that expands from the kitchen cooking flame into a flaming fireball that rapidly fills the room. The smoke that follows is combined with peat and vanilla adding complexity to the taste. For a moment, this is almost a overwhelming situation – but the vast power fades very rapidly leaving a nice and long finish that contains the peatfire, smokiness and oak.

On the second sip, I find that ash and coal are more closely present. Fire is still hot, but oily sweetness covers the tongue in a pleasant manner. Oiliness remains and carries the finish out very nicely.

With this all strong drams, some suggest adding water into them while I usually suggest taking very small sips. I like to experience the power and the taste and I have found out that many times adding a few drops of water will make the dram feel .. well… watered down. Occasionally, it has expanded the taste, but it does not work for everybody. Small sips and nature’s own means will create the combination inside mouth that will give the best of both worlds.

If I were to compare, 002 and 003 would wipe the table with this one. They have more charred personality, more intimidation and much more smoke with salty peatfire. However, this one is more subtle, more hiding and a much more difficult personality. It would be a comparison that is not fair for either of these two. They are brothers, who are too not alike. And they both have their moments. But if I were to pick which one I’d pour onto my glass… I’d choose 002/003 much more often than this one – especially if I am after a smoky peatfire experience with strong ashes.

After writing that, I must note that the finish is  still present and thus it is a long and a very pleasant. It has the enjoyable oiliness running around my mouth, the sweet oak and some peatfire that smolders with a style. Not a bad experience, after all! In addentum: I heard that adding water might actually do very good for this dram. I must take that under the test during the summer!

Laphroaig Select – the NAS is out there..

No Age Statement. NAS. This the what we, the enjoyers of the dram, will see much more in the future. The times of old age stated whiskies are diminishing. There are some of those who will fight but it may be the long and final battle, unless days of the future past changes the timeline.

So said, I don’t think all NAS whiskies are bad. Most are actually quite ok and some are good – or even great and exceptional. There will be always “cheaper single malts” and of course those that are much more expensive. There may be lots of reasons why the whisky does not have the age statement, but ultimately I think it gets down to the fact that there are some 3 years old dram in it. Thus, for marketing reasons they don’t want to ruin the image by printing 3YO onto the label.

Why this? Because the world is not the same as it was 20..30 years ago. It is not even the same as it was a decade ago! The speed, the fast pace and the networked unity of drammers wants more selection, new makes, new bottles, special releases and so forth. We cause this, so we might as well welcome it. Perhaps a bit harshly said, but the supplier is responding to the market’s needs. And when those older age statement drams come out to sale, they are not inexpensive. To put mildly. But as a devoted hobbyist, I enjoy the selection and the variance. Perhaps in my time, I will see the tide change and get my lips around some extraordinary whisky with age statements.. at a reasonable price.

However, Laphroaig Select is representing the new era. It is a NAS with less price tag. So, the first setting and expectation is altered by that fact. What is Select then? It is the new Laphroaig NAS (40%) that has emerged in selected sections of the world. It is matured in five different woods: Oloroso Sherry butts, new American white oak, PX hogsheads, quarter casks and finally in first filled bourbon casks. That’s a lots of different wood around the dram.

The nose is softer than what I would expect on any Laphroaig. Spices, herbs and some smoke. Not a big hit, but promises something good. It is surprising, how unlike Laphroaig the nose is.

The body is strongly filled with oak. There are sherry-spices present too, pepper and then perhaps some lime. Some smokiness is there too. For someone, who has tasted a lots of smoke whiskies – this is like a starter for the tasting. It is not too strong, and thus it is a easy start.

I don’t think this is a big hit. If you compare this to the famous Quarter Cask, then this one is left far behind. If compared with QA, then there is less gap but later I’ve grown fond of QA as a tastings starter. For this Select, there is not just enough dong to justify the ching. It is nice, pleasant even, but it is still a weak representation. In case the intention is to lure in more drinkers to Laphroaig, especially from the blended world, it does it job. It is not bad – far from it – but it does not make an impression either. If the need arises, this would be a easy dram to drink but I think I’ll save this one to tastings for comparison. 

Turun Whisky Barin tarjontaa sekä maistelussa Laphroaig 1989 23yo ja Kilchoman 100% Islay Single Cask

Aiemmin kertomani Kilchoman-maistelu tapahtui Turun Whisky Barissa. Sijainti on aivan loistava, suoraan torin vieressä. Jottei juoman perässä olijalla olisi liian helppoa, on uudelle kävijälle edessä pieni löytämishaaste koska suuret neonvalot eivät näy torille saakka ja taverna ei sijaitse ihan jalkakäytävän vierellä. Kunhan sisäpuolelle pääsee, tarjontaa löytyy kyllä mukavasti.

Eikä tuossa kuvassa ole edes kaikkea, mitä on saatavilla. Paikan pitäjä ymmärtää viskien päälle, joten siellä on hyvä ympäristö maistella tarjontaa. Paikka ei ole kuitenkaan mitenkään suuri ja avoinna vain illasta yöhön, joten harvoin varmaan onnistuu ihan omassa rauhassa siemailu.

Kilchoman-maistelun päätteeksi tuli esille pari hyvin kiinnostavaa pulloa hyllystä, joita sitten piti tietysti päästä saamaan tilkat omaan lasiin.

Aluksi on sanottava, että nämä molemmat viskit ovat ns “väärin maisteltuja”. Takana on jo ollut Kilchoman-maistelu ja pari olutta, joten tässä mennään täysin suutuntumalta.

 

Laphroaig Vintage 1989 23YO

Tämähän on se erikoisempi Laphroaig, mitä saa hankittua myös Alkon tilauslistalta. Hinta on vain sen verran suolainen (yli 220€) että Laphroaigin on oltava hyvin korkealla arvostuksessaan, ennenkuin tuon sokkona suostuu maksamaan. Nyt kun tilaisuus tuli, niin olihan sitä tiristelyt saatava suuhun ilman että tarvitsee maksaa niin paljon.

Tuoksu lasissa yllätti. Savu ei hyökännyt vastaan, vaan edessä seistä jökötti varsin miellyttävä henki. Pehmeä, monipuolinen ja antoi ymmärtää ettei nyt puhuta ihan perustavarasta.

Maussa on selkeästi reilusti Laphroagia, mutta toisin kuin useasti, tämä ei töki vaan on monipuolinen ja kokenut. Ei neitsyt, mutta paljon tehnyt ammattilainen joka tietää asiansa ja kokemus on oikein hyvä. Mutta ei tämä pääse yllättämään tai vie unohtumattomalle matkalle, jossa aistit vyöryvät yli äyräittensä kuin Aurajoki satunnaisesti. Tässä eivät laivat hae kamppailuasemaa tykit tanassa, vaan sen sijaan ne lipuvat rauhallisesti karmiininpunaisessa auringonlaskussa satamaan samalla kun juniorit jynssäävät kantta puhtaaksi. Pehmeän maalausmainen, monipuolinen ja syvä. Pysäyttää hetken. Valitettavasti (onneksi?) ei kuitenkaan saa minua laittamaan tilausta sisään, koska hinta ei kohtaa elämystä. Lopputuoksu katosi aika nopeasti lasista. Mukana ollut kaveri tykästyi tähän juomaan paljon myös, en yhtään epäile etteikö maistaisi uudestaankin jos sitä hänelle tarjottaisiin! 

 

Kilchoman 100% Islay 1st Edition Single Cask 2011

Toisena extrana tuli maistettua vähän aikaisempaa Kilchomania. 100% Islayn ensimmäisen vuoden yksittäisen tynnyrin pulloitetta. Bourbon-tynnyrissä kypsytelty kolmen vuoden tulos tarjoillaan sopivasti 60.2% vahvana, josta on odotettavissa mukava potku jos ei ota varovaisesti.

Verrattuna samassa maistelussa olleeseen toiseen Single Caskiin, tämä on paljon suorempi ja selkeämpi. Tässä on ilkikurisuutta ja raakaa voimaa, vähän kuin soittaisi stradivariusta pokasahan terällä. Ei ehkä aina järkevintä, mutta sopivassa tilanteessa hervottoman hauskaa! Edullisempikin viulu käy samaan lopputulokseen.

Viski tuoksuu mukavasti lasissa. Se antaa jo siinä vaiheessa ymmärtää, että kohta tuulee molemmista ovista. Suussa hehkuu Kilchomanin raaka maku, josta olen pitänyt 2010 vuodesta saakka. Tässä on potkua kuin tukkirekassa, ja maaliin tämä osuu Wilhelm Tellin tavoin: niin kuin tähtäsin, sen nuolen upotin.

Maistelijan on hyvä aloitella erittäin pienin annoksin ja varovaisesti, ei kannata samantien rynnätä kehään ammattinyrkkeilijän kanssa. Pyöritellen, kiertäen ja vähän kerrassaan antaa paljon paremman lopputuloksen.

Yllättävän vähän tässä oli enää savua mukana. Jotain tekemistä voi olla aiemmin mainitun faktan kanssa, että tämä pääsi lasiin vasta monen muun maistelun jälkeen. Mikäli Kilchomanin maut miellyttävät, tätä kannattaa myös maistaa. Näitä ei ole tullut toista vastaan.

Laphroaig Cairdeas 2013 Port Wood Edition for the Friends of Laphroaig

Deep inside the wilderness, where wild beasts walk and mate, the camp is set. The long hours of day are behind and dark mystical sky turns the hourglass to symbolize it’s reign. The fire is being set up from dead trunks of tree, filled with tar and smoke inside them. Small sticks catch the tender flame first, and they start eating that try tinder that was kept safe during showers and mist. Soon there is a smoke circling the wood and crackling sounds boom the silence. Fire is born and light reveals the tarp and worn out gear. Prehistoric travelers wonder the richness of the sky and wait for the moon to raise, since it is the night that demands rituals to ensure good hunting and game.
I’ve taken a few tastings of Cairdeas, but today when I started to write about it I was surprised about it’s feel and mood. Cairdeas Port Wood (51.3%) is an special annual release and this year it was sold empty in a matter of hours. As name suggests, this has seen port wine finishing to create a variation for ordinary Laphroaig taste.
The nose is charming me. The smokiness is not hitting with full strength, but it is there. As a promise. Also ordinary Laphroaig intimidation is hiding and does a very good job with it.
Taste reveals that the fire is burning. Smokiness is strong and taste bites like a big bear with a mortal wound. It does not last that long, but the peak is powerful. After that it is about the smoke and the wine with sweetness. Not the most ordinary combination with Laphroaig, but for me this is a home run! Second mouthful enhances the sweetness but the campfire keeps on burning and adding smoke. This something that shows off what smoky Islay can also produce. Very enjoyable experience and this one will keep the chatter going on when you have a tasting!

Laphroaig Quater Cask and Cask Strenght 003 took quite a day off recently. I didn’t know they do like to play in the water and seek out places where you don’t usually find Uisge Beatha. But of course, you never know what you will find on the shores, so keep your eyes open. This time it was not a alligator, but something that comes from the sea and brings greetings from the Islay!



               

Laphroaig QA Cask hands out an easy experience

Like a sunny and warm summer day. You swim in a lake, that has pleasant and clear waters. Occasional cold stream refreshes your feet and you dive deep to feel it more. There are dragonflies catching their prey, a duck and it’s eight ducklings swimming near a shore. Seldom clouds, but no fear of changing weather. It feels like a vacation, on which I am right now. But occasionally, there is a need to get back to the laptop and tell about a whisky, that suits the day.

Laphroag QA had evaded me for a while, and I accidentally found this on a ferry – this is a travel retail exclusive bottling. The tube inlays “a second maturation in fresh, un-charred American white oak (Quercus Alba) casks. “. QA stands, as you might now guess, for Quercus Alba. But this would be a perfect gift, because of it’s name, for Quality Assurance team night.

The nose contains the Laphroaig family characteristics. There is the fenol medical part, which has made Laphroaig very famous – liked or not. Some smoke, some sweetness. This is the cold stream in the lake, there is more body and character. There is the nasty temper, you want to wake up with control.

The first sip is both a strong and pale. There is (now that the bottle has been couple of weeks open..) Laphroaig medicine taste with some smoke. Then there is sweetness and spiciness too. But in the middle it feels a bit like you’ve taste the lake water or accidentally poured water into your Glencairn instead of Aalto (water glass).. At the end the strong protagonist returns and saves the day, after a gloomy dark cloud of water that poured it’s weak performance on QA.

The taste does not linger too long, but there is some to chatter about.

QA is an interesting package. At first, I was not impressed at all. It felt too watered. Later on, when the bottle gained some air and my tongue got more used to it… there was a positive change. Now I feel, it is  complex, yes, and it is Laphroaig. It does not take you to the Northern fury, but instead to blue lakes of warm waters and pleasant experiences. It is a nice Uisge Beatha to experience, easy and cleanly flavored. You don’t have to be the pro to understand and value this one, but even with years of tasting – it does give you something to think about. It does not break records, it does not stand on a high cliff alone and scream about ruling the world. But it does well with a group, or with some campfire. It is a great member of it’s team in a tasting. And would be a nice gift for anyone who is interested of Islay drams.

Laphroaig 13YO Signatory Vintage 1998 savujen saarelta

Pitkän ajan kuluttua, taipaleen takana jo haihduttua, keloon terä uppoaa. Kiehiset kietoutuvat auki tervan höystämästä vanhasta männystä. Piakkoin liekillä houkutteleminen alkaa tehdä tehtävänsä ja tanssivat savukiehkurat kohoavat kohti kaukaisuutta. Tunnit hiipivät, minuutit kolisevat, sekunnit jymisevät..  hiljaisuus täyttää ympäristön. Rauhallisuutta rikkovat vain satunnaiset metsän äänet, tuulen loputtomat tarinat ja kahvin kupliva porinointi.

Laphroaig. Tuo ikonen tislaamo. Siitä pidetään, tai sitä vihataan. Joillekin harvoille se tuntuu olevan se ja sama mitä lasiin kaataa. Mutta ei täällä, ei savuista nautiskelijoille. Pullotteita on useita, riippumatta tislaamosta. Aina löytyy joku villi-ihminen, joka päättää tehdä oman versionsa viskistä. Ja hyvä niin.Tämä Laphroaig on tislattu 1998 ja pulloja on tehty 649 kappaletta. Kahdesta tynnyristä on siis kyse (5552 ja 5553). Vahvuus on perinteisen 46% ja ikää tällä juomalla on 13 vuotta.

Tanssivien savujen lailla tämäkin viski piirtää ajatuksia, herättää mielikuvia. Syviä aatoksia siitä, miltä juoamasta mahtaakaan maailma tuntua tynnyrin ulkopuolella. Odotat kypsymistä, ehdit miettimään asioita. Ihmisten kasvot ja piirteet muuttuvat ulkopuolella. Aika on hidasta ja nopeaa. Tynnyri vähitellen antaa aromejaan sinulle kun niitä anelet ja kyselet. Hidastettu valloitus, vähän toista kuin säkenöivät yökerhot suurissa kaupungeissa. Verkkaistaminen on se termi millä voi kutsua tätä tapahtumaa.. Kypsytään verkkaisesti, vähän välitetään osavuosikatsauksista.

Öljyt piirtyvät lasiin oikein nätisti ja tuoksussa on riittävästi Laphroaigia. Aika on tehnyt tehtävnsä, tämä on vähemmän fenolisempi kuin se Laphroaig mihin on baaritiskillä totuttu. Savu ja merellinen olemus kuitenkin ovat tallella ja hyvin ovatkin paketissa, eivätkä hyöki enää silmille niin pahasti kuin peruspullotteessa. Muutama lisävuosi verkkaistamista on ajanut hyvin asiansa.

Maku on jopa hiukan hedelmäinen ja olisikin vaikea arvata tätä Laphroaigiksi. Kun sen tietää, ei tämä juoma pääse tunnistusrivistä karkuun ilman merkintää. Luonnetta löytyy, kirpeyttäkin, mutta miellyttävää savuista viskiähän siinä on eniten. Ei niin leveä kuin mitä toivoisi, mutta mainio lopputulema. Savu ja olemus, joka vie matkalle karumpiin muistoihin Lapin maisemiin on tallella. Kyllä tätä mielellään maistelee. Jälkimaku ei jää kauhean pitkäksi aikaa suuhun muistuttamaan nautinnosta, mutta riittävästi ettei tätä lyhyeksi voi haukkua.

Jälkituoksu lasissa on miedohko ja hennompi. Näiden tynnyrien kanssa on haettu jotain aristokraattisempaa lopputulosta, eikä niinkään pyritty tylyyn iskuun sotavasaralla keskelle kasvoja. Maistellen suuremman väen kera, turisten mukavia – siihen tämä on omiaan. Mukavampi kuin perusversio, olematta vaikea tai liian haastava. Oikein sopivaa maisteltavaa kelojen keskelle, hirsisten jykevien seinien sisäpuolelle, kynttilänvaloon ja elävän tulen rätinään.

Laphroaig PX – kokeilukausi

Makea tuuli puhaltaa mereltä, sekoittuen suolaan ja kaukaisen maan kaikuun. Mielikuvitus loihtii aaltojen keskelle muinaisten merimiesten tarinoita. Valaita. Jättiläiskalmareita ja muita merihirviöitä. Mainingit lyövät korkeina rantaan ja lähellä olevan niemen kärjessä suuri kokko palaa juhlistaen harvinaista tapahtumaa taivaalla. Punainen aurinko ja loimottavat liekit heijastuvat meren pinnasta, herättäen jälleen mysteerin henkiin.

§Laphroaig PX Cask on mielenkiintoinen kokeilu tislaamolta. Harvoin on tullut eteen näinkin vahvaa viskiä viimeisteltynä sherrytynnyreissä. Tällä kertaa tynnyrinä on onneksi ollut Pedro Ximinez ja mestarilla on pysynyt lapaset käsissään. Vastaavastihan esimerkiksi Lagavulinin Distiller’s edition on myös viimeistelty vastaavien tynnyrien kautta. Loistovalinta siis. Viski on vähän normaalia Laphroaigia vahvempaa (48%), ja se sopiikin tähän aivan passelisti.

Tuoksu on mielenkiintoinen, sekoittaen makeutta Laphroaigin tylyyn fenoliseen luonteeseen. Lopputulos on vivahteikas, monisyinen ja mielenkiintoinen. Tuoksu suorastaan houkuttaa maistamaan tätä juomaa!

Maku on luonteikas, samalla karu ja savuinen mutta myös moniulotteisen leveä ja makeakin. PX tynnyri on ollut juuri oikeanlaista tähän, tuomaan monimutkaisuutta Laphroaigiin. Maku säilyy suussa pitkään, fenolinen savu kiemurtelee ja tekee hyvää makunystyröille. Ainakin jos pitää tislaamon viskeistä. Tämä laukkaa eteenpäin kuin susi metsästysretkellään, määrätietoisesti mutta tutkien mitä edessä tulee. silloin tällöin purren rajusti, kun saalis erehtyy juoksemaan vauhkosti avattujen leukojen väliin. Tuupertumista ei tapahdu pidemmänkään ajan jälkeen vaan tahti säilyy maaliin saakka. Lopun jälkeen jossain vaiheessa makeutta alkaa tulla esille enemmän, luoden vähän ristiriitaista tunnelmaa muun viskin luonteen kanssa mutta tämä ei olekaan mikään helppo juoma.

Yksinkertainen tavallaan, monimutkainen kuitenkin luonteeltaan. Aivan mainio viski. Ei täydellinen, mutta mainio. Oikein mukava lisä Laphroaig-tarjontaan!

Laphroaig 12YO NC2 Duncan Taylor – savua, luonnetta ja pehmeyttä

Ajohärkä heittelee ahkiota perässään, matkan edetessä vinhasti jäätyneillä lumilla tuntureiden lakia pitkin. Kaamos on vielä päällä, valo kajastaa himmeästi horisontissa kun polku suuntautuu alemmaksi, kohti jokilaaksoa. Siellä aihkin, suuren petäjän, luona on kasvaa kookas kivi maasta. Lieneekö kokoa tullut taas lisää, mietiskelen. Paikka on yksi seita monista, enkä ihmettele, tässä vain istuu hiljaa ja katselee tauon verran. Maahisen kasvot kivessä ovat nyt lähellä lumirajaa – siellä se jurottaa pitkän talven, kohta pimeässä. Isomusta ei hän vieläkään minulle suonut, liekkö turha haave. Rannalta löytyy vielä akkantakkua, joka menee taskuun kuivumaan. Sillä saa tulet illalla aikaan, tervaskannon luokse. Hymyillen matka jatkuu, onkin jo aika päästä savuille istuskelemaan.
Duncan Taylor tekee yhtenä pullotteenaan NC2-sarjaa. Se tarkoittaa sitä, että näitä viskejä ei ole kylmäsuodatettu eikä värjätty millään tavalla. Ne ovat siis ‘puhtaampia’ kuin mitä isojen tislaamojen perusviskit yleensä ovat. Laphroaigin NC2 12YO, 46%, on tämän artikkelin aihe. Sitä on kypsytetty pari vuotta pidempään kuin perus Laphroaigia. Tämä pullo on vuoden 1997 tislauksesta, pullotettuna 2010. Viskin ikää laskiessa, vain täydet vuodet huomioidaan – siitä 12 vuoden ikä.

Tuoksusta käy ilmi hyvin tislaamo ja siinä onkin Laphroaigille tyypilliset tuoksut. Savu, fenolit, luonne ja mielikuvitus löytyvät helposti tätä tuoksutellessa. Vaikutus on laadukas, tasapainoinen ja miellyttävä. Ei niin pistävä kuin mitä perus 10YO versiossa yleensä on.

Maku on hyvin Laphroaig-mainen. Kuitenkin tässä on enemmän pehmeyttä ja vivahteita, johtuen jo tuosta parin vuoden lisäkypsennyksestä. Luonne on tallella, viskiä ei ole nöyryytetty tai alistettu mihinkään tavanomaiseen muottiin. Savu velloo makuhermoilla ja täyttää suun tyylikkäästi pitkäksikin ajaksi. Tämä ei ole yhtä paksu kuin mitä jotkut savuviskit ovat, mutta hienous on enemmänkin vivahteissa.

Jälkimaku ja tuoksu säilyvät, kuten perusversiossakin, mukavan pitkään. Yleisesti ottaen valitsisin tämän perusversion sijaan jos vain mahdollista. Maku on hienostuneempi, mutta luonteikas. Tämä ei ole tyly missään vaiheessa, mutta karuus on edelleen mukana. Oikein mukava viskinä, ei lainkaan hassumpi. Tietenkään perusversiota ei kannata jättää täysin poiskaan – miten muuten sitä osaisi esimerkiksi tätä viskiä arvostaa?

The Single Malts of Scotland: Laphroaig 13 single cask

Laavun pystytyksessä menee aikansa, tuulen tuivertaessa ja tehdessä kylmästä ilmasta vieläkin hyisempää. Revontulet räiskyvät ja valaisevat taivasta. Pari keloa on raahattu lähelle ja toisesta niistä nakutetaan samalla rakovalkeaa. Havuja levitetään paksulti ja niiden päälle heitetään vielä makuualuset. Savu tupsahtelee vähitellen keloista ja antaa toivoa siitä, että vähitellen voi levätä lämmössä. Ensin kuitenkin on syytä kaivaa kuksat esiin ja napata pari napollista lämmittävää juomaa.

Single Malts of Scotland on jälleen yksi ‘sarja’, joka tuottaa loistavia pulloja eri tislaamoiden tynnyreistä. Tämä  yksilö on Laphroaigia, joka on kypsytetty Hogsheadissa. Siitä on saatu 280 pulloa viskiä, joka on alkujaan vuoden 1996 Laphroaigia. Lopputulos on pullotettu 46% vahvuisena.

Tuoksusta käy jo ilmi, että SMS on tehnyt loistavan valinnan tynnyrin suhteen. Savu ja tammi ovat hyvin tasapainoisesti esillä ja lupaavat odottaa hyvää maistelukokemusta. Laphroaigin tuoksu on jäljellä edelleen, mutta vähemmän pistävänä kuin normaalisti. Onhan tässä 3 vuotta enemmän ikääkin.

Maistaminen onkin hiukan haastavampaa, koska kirjoitin juuri kahdesta muusta viskistä artikkelit. Eli tämä on jo kolmas maku suussa lyhyen ajan sisään. Maku ei ole niin vahva kuin perusversiossa, mutta sen sijaan monimuotoisempi, monivivahteisempi, syvempi ja myös hiukan leveämpi. Tämä ei hyökkää kasvoille vaan sen sijaan tulee paikalle väijyen ja kierrellen, pysyen alkuun hiukan piilossa ennen kuin paljastaa itsensä. Tammi maistuu tässäkin vahvasti ja tässä mennään makuasiaan onko sitä liikaa vai ei. Lopputulos ei ole ihan tasapainoinen, mutta arvoituksellinen ja asenteikas. Voisin sanoa että tässä viskissä on luonnetta hyvinkin paljon, ja on ehkä sääli että tämä on pullotettu niin laimeaksi.

Jälkimaku on kohtuullinen mukava. Paljon on seassa tammen karkeutta, mutta Laphroaig tulee vahvemmin esille kuin aikaisemmin maistelun aikana. Jälkituoksussa lasissa on myös hyvin havaittavissa mistä viskistä ja tislaamosta tässä on oikein kyse.

Laphroaig Triple Wood – tamminen ja tamminen

Kirves napsuttaa lastuja puusta. Parempi ettei silloin haaveile jostain muusta. Sopiva kasa silppua, antaa nuotion sytyttämiselle vauhtia. Voi miettiä minkälaista onkaan joskus muinaisuudessa ollut, kun esi-isämme on kanootin veistämällä männyistä alkuun pannut. Silloin savu ei ollut varmaan ihan niin arvostettua, mutta onpahan se ainakin peittänyt hien hajua. Osaisipa tehdä tynnyreitä, voisi käydä tekemään viskeillä vähän kokeiluja..

Laphroaig Triple Wood (48%) on aika uusi tulokas tislaamolta. Alkujaan tarkoitettuna myyntiin matkailutarkoituksiin (lentokentät, omani ostin Brysselin kentältä) mutta nykyään sitä alkaa saada jo muualtakin. Ajatuksena on varmaan ollut tehdä vähän erilaista, verrokkina loistava Quarter Cask. Kypsytys on tapahtunut ensin bourbon-tynnyreissä, sen jälkeen Quarter Caskeissa (1/4 tynnyrit) ja lopuksi eurooppalaisissa tammitynnyreissä. Lopputuloksena pitäisi siis olla jotain hyvin erilaista.

Tuoksussa on enemmän tammea, kuin Laphroaigia. Koska peruslappis jakaa hyvin paljon mielipiteitä, tulee mieleen että tässä on yritetty tehdä viskiä joka sopisi entistä useammille. Ei ehkä paras lähtökohta, mutta itselleni tuoksu on kyllä ihan miellyttävä.

Maku on vahvasti tynnyripitoinen. Esiin nousee tammi ja bourbonin vanilija. Lopetus suussa on hiukan karvas ja tuoreen oloinen, viimeistelemätön. Kaukana Quarter Caskin erinomaisesta tasapainosta. Tämäkin maku käy lävitse monta vaihetta maistelun aikana joka kulminoituu kahteen päälinjaan: alku on hyvä, lopetus vähän vähemmän. Maku ei varmasti miellytä kaikkia, vaikkei jaa mielipiteitä yhtä rajusti kuin perus Laphroaig. Omalla, kierolla, tavallaan ei kuitenkaan hassumpi. Karvaus tulee tammesta selkeästi esiin erityisesti. Lieneekö tälle tekisi hyvää joku viiniviimeistely tms.

Jälkimauksi jää karvaus aika vahvasti esille. Mutta viski on myös karuhko, ja ihan mukava tuulahdus Islayltä. Ehdottomasti pitää kokeilla uusia asioita, kysymys onkin onko tässä haettu tislaamon puolelta bulkkiviskiä lentokentille vai mistä on kyse. Kun lasi on ollut tyhjänä jonkin aikaa, tuoksu alkaa parantua huomattavasti. Kannattaa haistella.

Laphroaig Duncan Taylor Rare Auld 13YO Single Cask 2010 ja 2011

Tämä tuoksu pelkästään heittää minut karuun maailmaan. Siellä missä tervaiset savut tunkeutuvat silmiin niin että itkettää ja naurattaa samaan aikaan, hetkiin jolloin jalka ei meinaa raahautua toisen eteen kuin sisulla, hetkiin joissa janoonsa joutuu juomaan kertaalleen keitettyä ja haaleaa vettä jossa on savua ja nuotiosta lentäneitä roskia. Vinhaa tuulta ja jylhiä maisemia, rakkaista tunturinrinnettä ja tuulensuojaa, johon aurinko paistaa ja lämmittää. Se on se karu Lappi, joka vetoaa kerta toisensa jälkeen.

Duncan Taylor on pullottamo, joka tekee yleisesti ottaen laadukkaita sarjoja eri tislaamoilta. Heillä on Rare Auld-sarja, johon on valittu vähän tarkemmin tynnyrit joita on pullotettu. Laphroaigilta he ovat tehneet ainakin 12 ja 13 yo sarjat jo toista vuotta, tai tämän verran olen itse heihin tutustunut. Molemmat pullot ovat yhdestä tynnyristä (2010 56512: 267/271 ja 2011 8355: 149/315). 2010-versio on hiukan vahvempaa (55.1%) kuin 2011-versio (54.8%) vaikkakin erot eivät ole suuren suuret. Kummatkin pullot on kypsytelty tammitynnyreissä.

Tuoksu vuoden 2010 viskissä on intensiivinen ja siitä selkeästi käy ilmi tislaamo. Tammi nousee esille pienen tuoksuttelun jälkeen. Meri, karuus ja makeus seuraavat maussa vahvasti mukana. Toisin kuin 10YO Laphroaig näissä on maku jo tasapainoisempi, vaikka kyseessä onkin vahva viski. Jälkimaku rokkaa pitkään monisyisenä kokemuksena.

2011 vuoden versio juuri avattuna (ns. kaulahuikka) antaa kuvaa vähän erilaisesta maailmasta. Tuoksusta tulee mieleen vanha tynnyri, joka on tehty vanhasta tammipuusta joka on nähnyt maailmaa satojen vuosien ajan. Myllerryksestä toiseen. Tuoksu on aika kaukana Laphroaigista, mutta pidempään kun ottaa lasista tuoksuja tislaamonkin sieltä löytää. Maku on aivan erinomainen kuitenkin. Se on sekoitus pehmeyttä ja karuutta, tyventä ja myrskyä, hyökyaaltoa ja tyyntä lammen pintaa. Mieleen jäävä yhdistelmä. Laphroaig-maku on paljon enemmän taustalla kuin 2010-versiossa. Hyvin miellyttävä, hyvin hienostunutkin – kuten Ravadas-köngäs joka on hienostunut mutta villi ja petollinen kokijalleen. Lapin taikaa on sekin, että kauneus on vaarallista. Valmistautuneelle on tarjolla kokemuksia mihin ei löydy vertaistaan, valmistautumaton voi kadota sen syövereihin.

Savu on läsnä molemmissa versioissa oikein hyvin. Se kertoo juuri sitä tarinaa, mitä on kiva kuunnella. Se jää lasiin lopuksi vahvasti tuoksumaan, se vie ajatuksia nuotiosavuille, jyrkänteille, kokemuksille. Tämänkaltainen savu on niitä syitä, miksi savuiset viskit minua kiehtovat.

Kokemuksia hakevalle nämä pullot antavat hyvinkin paljon uutta. Erittäin mainioita molemmat, vaikka ovatkin yllättävänkin erilaisia. Kumpi sitten miellyttää minua enemmän? Tällä hetkellä 2011-versio, mutta se riippuu omista tuntemuksista kunakin päivänä. Tänään tätä, huomenna sitä toista. Kannattaa kokeilla, jos pääsette maistamaan!

Laphroaig 18YO – savumestari

Katson kuinka tuli syttyy. Savukiehkura nousee tervaisten lastujen keskeltä, sitten savu tulee enemmän ja viimein liekit alkavat kohota ja nuolla yhtä useampia uhrejaan. Pian liekit rätisevät koko nuotion voimalla ja tervasavu hiipii kohti varomattomia silmiä. Tällä kertaa savu ei löydä helppoja uhreja, vaan konkareita jotka tuntevat tulen metkut. He nauttivat savun olemuksesta, sen henkäyksistä ja muistoista mitä tuoksu heissä herättää. He ovat mestareita savun maailmassa.

Laphroaig 18 YO (48%) on mestarillinen viski. Minulla on hiukan huonoja kokemuksia iäkkäämmistä Laphroaigeista, joten pientä varausta oli ilmassa kun tätä kävin maistelemaan. Tuoksu on savuinen ja miellyttävä, hienostunut (aidosti) ja tuntemuksia herättävä. Siinä on mukava menneisyyttä ja tyyliä, suuria tapahtumia ja seisahtuneita hetkiä. Maku vastaa savuun ja vie pienelle retkelle savuisiin takomoihin, kuivaamoihin ja tervaisiin venevajoihin. Tässä viskissä ei ole mitään 10-vuotiaan raakuudesta jäljellä, mutta se on korvaantunut monisyisellä vanhan jäärän luonteella joka puraisee sopivasti oikeasta paikasta.

Tuoksu ja maku vaihtelevat sen mukaan kun juoma saa lisää ilmaa, ja tämä vain paranee pitkän maistelun aikana. Lopuksi tuoksu säilyy mukavan pitkään lasissa, muistuttaen turvesavuista joita juuri koki. Kokonaisuudessa ei ole mitään ylimääräistä, tekijät ovat pitkän linjan käsityöläisiä jotka tietävät mikä toimii ja mikä ei. Lopputuloksena on tyylikäs ja hyvin salonkikelpoinen tuote, jota kelpaa esitellä ylpeydellä.

Tämä on yksinkertaisesti mainio ja hienostunut, mutta luonteikas, viski. Ne jotka tätä lukevat lahjavinkkien toivossa niin tässä on yksi mainio ehdokas.

Laphroaig Cask Strenght 003 – tömisevää savua ja turvetta

Vuolen hiuksia halkovan terävällä veitsellä tervasmännystä lastuja. Terä katkaisee puunsäikeitä toisistaan pitkin sulavin vedoin. Puun pinta jäljen kohdalta on hiottuakin sileämpi, aivan kuin näin olisi tarkoitettu tapahtuvan. Asetan lastujen keskelle aiemmin päivällä keräämiäni sytykkeitä – kuivaa ruohoa ja muita roskia, puunsilppua ja kuivia korsia. Otan esille tulukseni, jotka sain lahjaksi ystävältäni joitain vuosia takaperin, ja alan houkuttelemaan tulta esille. Onneksi paikka on suojainen ja vähitellen magnesiumkipinät sytyttävät ruohot kytemään. Savun ensimmäiset kiehkurat nousevat esille ja pian liekkien hidas tanssi voi alkaa.

Laphroaig Cask Strengh 003 (55,3%, Tammikuu 2011) on aivan eri luokkaansa kuin mitä Teerenpelin tuotokset ovat . Tästä tiedän, että kyseessä on viski joka kuuluu minun maailmaani. Savu hyökkää kasvuille kuin ärhäkkä karhu epäonnisen sienestäjän selkään, turve maiskuttaa kosteana vuotavien saappaiden alla ja makuelämys vie vaeltajan alkukantaisimmille ajoille. Sivistynyt ei kuvasta tätä juomaa, ehhei. Mutta siinä on viittauksia tulevaan ja nykymaailmaan. Se ei vie luolamieskaudelle, ellei kyseinen luola ole sopivan matkan päästä lentokentästä. CS003 antaa elämyksiä, se vie maistelijan hetkeksi omaan maailmaansa mutta päästää sieltä vaatteet savuisena takaisin heti kun illuusion haluaa rikkoa.

Juoma on vahvaa ja väkevää. Varomattomalle maistelijalle voi olla kyseessä jopa liian raju kokemus, mutta itse pidän tästä juomasta. Siinä on lapin elementit mukana: savu, turve, karuus ja ne on jaettu niin, että karuus on saanut suurimman potin. Ehkä tämä on hiukan epätasapainossa sen suhteen, mutta aina ei kannata hakea sitä täydellistä juomaa. Kuitenkaan tämä ei ole mitään itsepolttoisen makuista, kyllä tuon tislaamon väki osaa asiansa ja he haluavat kokeilla mitä saavatkaan aikaan.

Kannattaa välillä tehdä retki karuille maille, jonka jälkeen tiedostaa kuinka epäaitoa tekemällä tehty hienostuneen maun hakeminen voi pahimmillaan olla.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask – terveisiä parhaasta neljänneksestä

Korkean kurun syvänteessä koski jyrisee armotta hakaten kiviä päivä toisensa jälkeen. Kuoha ja höyry nousevat sakeana pilvenä ylöspäin, vain kadotakseen viileään ilmaan. Joki on saanut alkunsa kaukaiselta suolta ja kulkenut läpi pitkän mutkittelevan uransa rauhalliseen tahtiin. Nyt se vapautuu ärjyvällä voimalla vain laantuakseen jälleen.

Tuuli tuo mukanaan tervehdyksen karulta kaukaiselta mereltä ja jäisen suolainen viesti sekoittuu kirkkaaseen jokiveteen. Hyvä muistutus siitä, ettei nyt olla kaupungin laitamilla vaan erämailla. Tässä paikassa on hyvä istua ja laittaa nuotio kytemään kivien koloon. Samalla voi kaivaa repusta esille nokeentuneen pannun ja kiivetä polkua pitkin jylisevien kivien hakemaan siihen täytettä. Pannua peittaa savulta tuoksuva tervainen kerros – pohjoisen nuotiot saavat tuon aikaan.

Maasto polveilee nuotiolta katseltuna ylös ja alas. Männyt ja koivut elävät tässä laaksossa sopusoinnussa, jota rikkovat vain satunnaiset purot ja siirtolohkareet. Aurinko siivilöityy latvusten kautta maalaten maisemasta vielä täydellisemmän. Ilmassa maistuu yön lähestyvä viileys jo nyt.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask on 10-vuotiasta sisarustaan pehmeämpi, mutta pitää sisällään jykeviä voimia. Se osaa antaa itsestään miellyttävän kuvan, mutta varomaton saattaa astua kielekkeeltä harhaan. Kuten nuotion kekäleet, QC maistuu suussa vielä pitkään sen jälkeen kun viimeisetkin tipat lasista on valutettu. Siitä jää jäljelle myös hiipuvan turpeisen savun tuoksu, jota ei kannata sivuuttaa.

Viski on alun jälkeen kypsennetty pienemmissä tynnyreissä, jotka ovat kooltaan neljänneksen normaalista. Tämä antaa vauhtia kypsennykseen ja monimuotoisuutta sen makuun. Vahvuudeltaan viski on 48%, mikä sopii kun hakee hienostunutta mutta Islayn luonteikasta makua.
