UISGE 2019

Edellisestä Uisgeestani olikin jo aikaa (2014), joten hirvittävän aktiiviseksi Uisge-kävijäksi minua ei pääse kutsumaan. Tänä vuonna kuitenkin kalenterit ja planeetat asettuivat oikeisiin asentoihin jolloin pitihän tämä mahdollisuus hyödyntää.

Mikään suunnitelma ei kestä ensikontaktia. Ajatukseni siitä mitä maistelisin menivät tietysti uusiksi heti kättelyssä. Olin miettinyt tarjolla olevien (todennäköisesti huikeiden) viskien, kuten Ardbeg Lord of Isles, maistamista mutta päädyin kuitenkin siihen, että haluan vähän enemmän monipuolisuutta ja erilaisia makuelämyksiä. Ja onhan se niinkin, että Uisgessa on jonkin verran hälinää vaikka paikalla oli heti ovien avauduttua klo 15, joten viskiharvinaisuuksista ei saisi sitä kaikkea irti mitä toivoo.

Tästä Uisge-matka alkoi.

Aloituksen arpominen oli yllättävänkin hankalaa. Taliskerin 18-vuotias tuntui sopivalta pienen pohdiskelun jälkeen. Hyvä, syvä ja pitkämakuinen saarten juoma.

Yllättäen ja pyytämättä suunnitelma vaihtui samantien täysin erilaiseen. Suosittelujen kautta löytyi lasista GlenAllachie:ta. Kuulopuheiden mukaan tislaamo on sekä uusi että vanha - se on tehtyt vuosikymmeniä viskiä pääasiassa blendeihin ja nyt lähihistoriassa se on tullut mukaan Single Maltien monipuoliseen maahan ja ensimmäiset pullot ilmestyvät myös Alkoihin lähiaikoina. Maistuva, perushyvä viski. Tätä pitää maistaa uudestaan vähän rauhallisemassa ympäristössä.

Highland Parkin setup oli näyttävä.

Uisgen ensimmäinen pihvi, jonka tiesin haluavani ehdottomasti maistaa. Se on tietysti Octomore ja tässä tapauksessa 6-vuotias yhden tynnyrin pullote. Huikea kokemus, jossa yhdistyi Octomoren luonteenomainen väkevä turvesavu ja maku hyvin öljyiseen kokemukseen. Dramfoolin perustaja jutteli , tätä kehuessani, että hänen kauttaan voisi hankkia vaikka oman Octomoren tynnyrin jos pullo ei riitä.. Tämä viski jäi mieleen. 

Eikä Octomore ollut ainoa loistava Dramfoolin pulloista. Port Charlotte 15yo Single Cask on myös voittaja. Erittäin upea Port Charlotte vanhempana kuin koskaan - tämä tynnyri on alkupään PC tuotantoa ja 15 vuoden ikääntyminen on ollut makua lisäävä prosessi. Öljyisyys on tässäkin vahvasti läsnä, viski on muhkea, maukas, miedon savuinen/turpeinen ja jälkimaku - se on erittäin pitkä.

Port Charloten jälkeen piti vähän nollata makumaailmaa, Redbreast Lustau maistui yllättäen äskeisen kokemuksen jälkeen hyvältä. Erittäin positiivinen kokemus. 21-vuotias voittaja jäi maistettavaksi toiseen kertaan.

Jamesonin maistaminen ei ollut suunnitelmissa, mutta kuitenkin siihen päätyi kun keskusteli heidän edustajan kanssa. Crested oli positiivinen kokemus. Viski puraiseekin alussa aika ärhäkästi mutta pehmenee nopeasti ja lopputulos on miellyttävä. Jälkimaku on lyhyt, mutta tämä toimisi hyvin illanistujaisissa - helppo mutta viski.

 Seuraavaksi suuntana oli Suomen tarjonta ja Valamon 6-vuotias. Hyvin heidän viski kehittyy, vaikka tässä itselle tuli sellaisia makumielleyhtymiä jotka eivät liity viskiin mitenkään. Hämmentävää, mutta odottelen tämänkin kanssa toista maistelukertaa. Kirkkoviinikyspytetty Valamo on erittäin mainio kokemus sen sijaan - monipuolinen, tuhti ja maukas. 

Uisgeessa näkyi myös tuttuja Turusta!

Vihdoin oli aika päästä Bowmore-maisteluun. Listalla oli 15yo, Vaulta Edition 1, Tempest V, Devil's Cask II ja 25yo. Mahtava sarja viskejä. Vaultin suolaisuus miellyttää edelleen, Tempest maistui mainolle myrskylle mutta voitoin vei Devil's Cask II. 25yo Bowmore on myös mahtava ja täyteläinen viski, mutta Devil's Caskin intensiteetti ja maun pirullinen kokonaisuus kruunasi illan.

Bowmore-maistelun jälkeen silmiin osui Octomoren 8.4. Ei pettänyt odotuksia, vaikkei ihan samaan pääse kuin Dramfoolin 6yo. Octomoret on vain hyviä omassa suussa.

Writer's tears toimi hyvin Octomoren jälkeen makujen nollaaja. Maistuikin vielä. Yllättävän hyvä irkkuviski jota voisi maistaa toistekin!

Teerenpelin Savu tuli maistettua viime vuonna. Tynnyrivahva Savu on monta luokkaa miedompaansa parempi versio. Jälleen yksi Teerenpeli mikä nousi listalle "tätä on maistettava uudestaankin".

Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2018. On se vaan hyvä.  Itse olen pitänyt eniten Gormin ensimmäisestä versiosta, mutta tämä 2018 versio kisaa sen kanssa aika tiukasti paremmuudesta.

Devil's Cask III löytyi maistettavaksi. Toimi tässäkin vaiheessa - mahtavan pirullinen maku tässäkin versiossa!

Port Charlotte 10yo versio 3 maistui Port Charlottelta. Devil's Caskin jälkeen ei ollut parhaassa paikassa eikä pärjää 15yo Single Cask serkulleen mutta ehdottomasti Port Charlotte jota pitäisi maistattaa muillakin. Pidän tästä suunnasta mihin PC on menossa.

Springbank 9yo poikkesi hyvin paljon muista Springbankeista mitä on tullut maistettua aiemmin. Ei huono lainkaan tämäkään.

Mitä olisikaan viskimessut ilman absinttia? Maistuuhan nämä edelleen. 

Kokonaisuutena ilta oli monipuolinen ja maistuva. Illan parhaiksi itselle jäi Octomoren ja Port Charlotten Single Caskit sekä Devil's Cask II & III. Nuo osuvat omaan maailmaani parhaiten juuri itseä puhuttelevien elämysten kautta: savua, turvetta, nokea ja ölyisen monipuolista tuhtia makua joka ei lopu kesken.

Teerenpeli Kaski : update

Every whisky has that moment. It is the point of no return, when you pour last dram out of the bottle and then it is empty. It is no more. It was unique at the best, relief at worst.

What has changed in three years? 

Of course I have changed. I have walked on my road, found new treasures and lots of tastes in the Whisky world. Perhaps it has shown me a lots more of shades to this drams.

Time has also changed Kaski. It has gasped air, it has traveled and it has been sleeping in my closet. In a sense, it has "matured". Not in a barrel-sense, but all that air has done some changes. Especially after the bottle had less than 1/3 of it's content left.



So there it was. And the bottle was empty.

What took me by the surprise, was that how good Kaski felt. It had much more broader shoulders than three, or even two, years ago. There was depth and soul. There was even some smoke present in all that complex form.

Overall, the experience was into the standards I expected of Kaski three years ago. Perhaps I have changed more than the whisky, but frankly I don't care. Man can change. Man's nature can change. Whisky can change too. This is evolution, not the final stop.

What can change the nature of the..
I have found that last drops of strong flavored drams (peatsmoke) usually only get better and better. The air does change it, which is great - you can live with the Whisky and experience all sides of it. Meanwhile you will have much more contrast, since you obviously have sampled some other whiskies during those years.

I hope the same effect will happen to my Hosa ( http://savuista.blogspot.fi/2015/03/teerenpeli-hosa-from-black-cask.html ) as well. It still has plently of content, so I might just sip it carefully every few months.. Just make sure about it's quality and observe the change.

Vintage Finnish Whisky ads

My friend found some old newspapers from the year 1932 and saw there something that he knew I would be interested about. Not that many of those whiskies are around these days.

These days you are not allowed to advertise whisky in newspapers anymore - at least not in Finland.
It would be good to store some of the current ads, they would be interesting to check out in 70-80 years from now.

The Midsummer is here: Gin Gin!

While this blog is usually about whiskies, and in focus about whiskies including smoke, there is also always room for exceptions. If you know about Kyrö Distillery, then you know that they make 100% Rye Whisky in Finland – their first whisky should be out 2017.

I’ve had a few Midsummer whiskies in this blog earlier. This time it is about the drink and feel it produces. Kyrö’s Gin has the Finnish world included in their essence.
So, the Kyrö Distillery Company also produces Gin. Not just to their own brand, but they produce Gin to some other companies as well. We’ll leave those bits on a side track and focus on the real deal here. KDC Napue and Koskue Rye Gins. I’ve had a few gins during my years of wander in this land of drinks but I never thought about blogging about any of those. Until now. Without the connection to the rye whisky this even would not have happened. But since those great fellows are producing this stuff I of course will tell about them. And btw, Kyrö did won a award for the best corporate identity in Finland. For a good reason, they have got a unique and self-ironic, yet knowing their value, style in all their material.

Napue

was their first gin. Transparent, clear, like most of other gins I’ve encountered. It noses like a gin, it has a palate like a gin.. it is a gin! And actually a real tasty one. This one will take you to a nice hot walk in Finland’s summer.. especially Midsummer! Meadows, buckthorns, birch and herbals mix that only a witch of the wilds can come up with.  It resembles of the midsummer night, while keeping the day’s fiery warm deep buried in the bedrock. It is the cool quick swim in a clear Saimaa lake: refreshing, chilly and yet extremely pleasant experience.
 


All kinds of herbs are mixed into KDC gins.

 

Koskue

is the one who got to spend some time in a barrel. It shares the color with some whiskies (a bit more yellow though), albeit it is not a strong coloring. The scent has more elegancy, fruits and perhaps a bit of rye too. It is gin, but more complex and less direct.  Palate has more taste like gin in it, but the complexity continues. This is a riddle told by an old man. You just can’t get in and while the tale is at the end you’ll figure out the beginning. Fast and yet it will linger in your tongue for a while. This one has more spice in it, and the herbals have been mixed a lot with fruits. The pepper will be a very dominant taste at the end. Koskue is delightfully different than Napue. Both are by the way village names near the distillery.

KDC Kyrö Distillery Juuri (Origins or Roots) take #two

Since that time, I have learned that KDC produces their drams in relatively small batches (roughly 600 0,5 liter bottles at the time) and there can be variance between batches. It all depends on multiple factors. Unless the vatting is done on larger number of batches there are differences between bottling batches.

When I got my hands onto sample about batch 8 and Raw Origins, I naturally had to review what’s going on especially since I had now visited the distillery and learned more about their process.

The Rye KDC uses for their mash is excellent. I was able to taste it and I was taken away with that experience. It is great to know how their raw ingredient fares and what the actual end product will taste.

The sample of the batch 8 has a lot better and softer nose than the batch 13. While it is like a moonlighted booze (it is booze after all), it has a great scent in it. Soft rye with some summer combined into it. But what is more important, is that the taste is a lots more tolerable and soft. It is rough, like a Finnish drink should be, but it also has a great rye in it. This is much more balanced and much more complex, than the one from the room 13. Personality is nicer, there is some twist and joke in it but what is the most important part: the finish is longer and way more pleasant. While this is far away from whisky (this is new make, unaged) this is a good base for the dram to come.

While at it, I have to write about the Raw Juuri also. Normally Juuri is tamed down to 46.3% while the Raw Juuri is bottled at 63.8%. This is actually also the strength used when the Juuri is put into barrels for maturation. Considering the angel’s share I’d guess the final Cask Strenght KDC Rye Whisky will be roughly 52-58% – depending on the age of course.

I have no details about the batch of the  Raw Juuri I tasted, but I am surprised how mild and soft the scent is. Considering the power of the drink, I was expecting a lot tougher experience. The Rye scents nice!

Also the palate is first a lot more softer than I thought it would be. The bite emerges much later than I was anticipating. Rye, summer, sun and vast fields surround me when I dive deep into this one. Nothing bad, but there is a constant reminder that this is just the step one. The cask hasn’t given it it’s share yet – and the cask maturation is the big difference between a booze and the whisky. The finish burns and steams, like a steampunk locomotive in a heat but it cools down after finishing it’s goal. Too bad I don’t know the batch of this one, but I must say I enjoy the Raw Juuri much more than the ordinary one.
